Over 25 years of creating images, you move from style to style, as you find your own visual voice and the journey has been very rewarding, with some lifelong friendships made along the way.
I prefer the philosophy and style of Nikon equipment, although firmly believe that whatever the camera is that you hold in your hand is not the essential element, the eye and the passion behind it are.
I love simplicity. Whether that be of line, colour, shape, or even concept, the image should find a natural rhythm or balance.
My goal is to look beyond reality, into the core of the subject to unearth the beauty in the darker side of life. My images are artworks in their own right, having the essence of the original photograph, but moving far beyond, into impressionism. My current style tends towards Victorian Gothic, with a dose of impressionism thrown in for good measure.
I very much admire the works of photographers such as the baroque style of Paul Gummer’s landscapes, the amazing Photoshop techniques of Peter Eastway, Andre Gallant’s creative style, Robin Short’s impressionism and the simplicity of Freeman Patterson, Dewitt Jones and Jay Masiel.
However, I must acknowledge my biggest mentor along the way – Don Campbell APSNZ - who has taught me much of what I know, both technically and having appreciation for the image.
Now, I try to balance the photograph works with the working in acrylics on canvass. The two seem to live together side by side in harmony.
Anyway, enough with the words……. On to the visual.
